Water Park at Home

Our lovely Southern California weather... we went from 55 degrees two days ago to 90+ here today.  So what are girls to do but enjoy the sun!
We finally broke out Elise's water table that we got her for her birthday.  She loved it!

My little girl is in love with water! She could spend hours on end in the bath.  She has been going in the pool since she was two months old and will "dunk" herself under water with a smile on her face.  She loved this!

When she got bored of the water table I was rinsing the grass off her legs with the hose and that was just more water that she HAD to have.  So we played with (and drank from) the hose for another 20 minutes or so!  She is my love!

Meal Planning

I have tried and failed at this "meal planning" for months (maybe years).  But I think I finally got the hang of it and it is fabulous!

Brian and I try not to eat out too often.  And when we do go out it is only on the weekends.  I am home all day with Elise and yes of course I am busy with her, but I can make dinner every night so we can:
A: eat healthier
B: save money and
C: get Elise to bed by 7:00 and not be at a restaurant before all of the local senior citizens.

So meal planning.  Every Sunday I plan out our dinners for the week and make an exact list of what I will need for each meal.  Then Monday morning I head to the store and get our supplies. There is still the occasional "Oh crap I need tomatoes" run to Trader Joe's but nothing like I was doing before.

I don't plan out our breakfast and lunches (yet) because those are typically leftovers or fresh veggies for Elise that I can whip out easily.  BUT I do plan our weekend breakfast (Brian's guilty pleasure!)

So this week we had a few great dinners:  Beef Stroganoff, Crunchy Onion Chicken, Steak & baked potatoes, fish and chips and tonight we are trying something new!

Tonight we are going to try the Food Network BLT Pasta Salad
I am going to add some grilled chicken to it for some more protein and probably play with the mayo/sour cream/milk combo to find a way to make it a little "lighter"
But here it is:

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces corkscrew-shaped pasta
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 12 ounces lean bacon
  • 3 medium ripe tomatoes, cut into chunks
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme
  • clove garlic, minced
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 4 tablespoons chopped chives or scallion greens
  • 5 heads Bibb lettuce, quartered, or 5 cups chopped romaine hearts

Directions

Cook the pasta in a large pot of salted boiling water as the label directs. Drain and toss with the milk in a large bowl; set aside.
Meanwhile, cook the bacon in a large skillet over medium-high heat until crisp. Drain on paper towels. Discard all but 3 tablespoonsdrippings from the pan. Add the tomatoes, thyme and garlic to the pan and toss until warmed through; season with salt and pepper.Crumble the bacon into bite-size pieces; set aside 1/4 cup for garnish. Toss the remaining bacon and the tomato mixture with the pasta.
Mix the mayonnaise, sour cream and 3 tablespoons chives with the pasta until evenly combined. Season with salt and pepper. Add the lettuce; toss again to coat. Garnish with the reserved bacon and the remaining 1 tablespoon chives. Serve at room temperature.

Get Up- Get Motivated

I knew that I was being pretty lazy when it came to working out (ok, like NEVER working out).  But I was breastfeeding and eating pretty well.  More than anything I was just putting it off more and more.  Well then I stopped breastfeeding (thus drinking wine again) and the scale just started climbing.  I realized how bad it was when I thought about needing to schedule my annual visit with my OBGYN and the staggering fact that my weight was higher than it was at my 6 week postpartum visit (to be fair I had lost all of my pregnancy weight by my PP visit, just not my miscarriage weight).

This picture that we took on Elise's birthday is what REALLY got me motivated!  Besides the obvious bad hair day and the fact that Hubby only knows how to take pictures at the worst angle possible... I REALLY need to do something about this.

So today was Day 1 of The Shred (again).

The 30 Day Shred is an evil but wonderful workout video by Jillian Michaels that is only 20 minutes and she promises you the world.  I will give her my 20 minutes, lets see what I actually get in return.

I am also finally going to do some serious walking with Elise in the stroller again.  I think we are finally going to be getting Spring weather and I need to get us outside more anyway... I might as well strap on my ankle weights and water belt (yeah, thats the technical term for some strange body best you wear that makes you sweat your hiney off while you workout... just don't smell that thing).

Now coming here will also help me be accountable for what I do!

All I know is I want to look good in sundresses when we go to Charlotte, NC in a few weeks and I have to don a swimsuit for Elise's swimming lessons soon.... damn I need a glass of wine just thinking about that!

Gosh that picture is BAD--- just for clarification (because I need it) I am not as big as I look in the picture.  I am only 145  Gulp!

Our 12 Month Doctor Visit

Elise had her 12 month checkup yesterday and everything went great.  She is getting bigger and is thriving! Proud Mama here!

Her stats:
30 3/4 inches long (90th percentile)
19lbs 12 ounces (25th percentile)
head circumference 46 cm (75th percentile)

She is still a string bean but is following along in her growth pattern just perfectly.

Her doctor was so excited when she heard all of Elise's words:
Dada, mom, bye, hi, SHOES (this one cracked the doctor up big time), kisses....
She has a great vocabulary already.

Elise also had to get three shots.  I think this was the first time that she looked down at her leg and saw the nurse actually administer the needle.  Elise just looked up and gave a snarl with a loud shriek like "What the hell did you just do to me?!"

We came home and cuddled and she is back to her normal self today.

We do have to go in to see the Pediatric Opthamologist next month because her left tear duct is still clogged boo!

A Beautiful Flashback

Now that all of the birthday festivities are over, I thought it would be special to take a moment to look back at Elise's TRUE Birthday.
March 26, 2010
Elise was born at 8:16 pm (after only 30 minutes of pushing!)
She was perfect.  She latched on and nursed right away and this was just moments later.  She was probably about 30 min old.
I can't look at this picture without melting!

She was such a wonderful and happy baby and we have had so much fun this year.
My tiny little 7lb 4oz peanut has blossomed into this beautiful ::gulp:: TODDLER!

 Again, swoon!
Just looking at her makes me all soft and mushy!
 I love my Bug!

Ladybugs

Just in time for Elise's first birthday party the skies turned blue and the sun came out.  We were able to celebrate a very special day with our family and friends and the guest of honor of course!  We had such an amazing day.  Elise was a trooper and truly enjoyed her party day like a seasoned pro.

I spent a month prepping for the party but still had to wait until the last minute to do so much because we didn't know if we were going to have to move everything inside.  Elise played with her grandpa while we were decorating and even squeezed in a nap before the festivities.  I was really nervous that she wouldn't go down at all and be a crabby birthday girl.

I made all of the decorations myself and had a great time using my new favorite tool: the Silhouette.
I figured that since I love doing things like this it was the perfect time to ask Brian to get it for me.  With Elise being our first child, thus this being our first birthday party I would get a lot of use out of it, and I already have!

The color of the walls don't really "go" but hey, its what we had.

The string of pictures are her "Picky Sticky" pictures that we took each month.  I figured we worked so hard making sure we captured each of her "month birthdays" it was a great way to show everyone how she spent her first year.  It was also adorable to see just how much she changed from month to month.  Mama might have cried putting this together.

One of the smartest things that we did for her party was order food.  We didn't do anything fancy but we ordered El Pollo Loco and it was fantastic!  Normally I would make all of the appetizers, meal and desserts but as Brian said, there is no reason to be a hero.  Get some help.  And the help made amazing chicken!  And I can't believe how many people really LOVE EPL!  Thank goodness!

As far as appetizers I went very simple... we had a veggie tray and my mom and I made these cute ladybug snacks.  They were simple but delicious.  The only suggestion I have is to try not to make them too far in advance because they tend to get a little soggy.  We used Ritz crackers with onion & chive cream cheese.  Then topped with an olive and a cherry tomato.  Yum! And so cute.

The dessert table is what I wanted to have as the  main focal point of the room/party.  I think it turned out pretty well for my first one.  I didn't get a close up of the cupcakes but I am waiting on some pictures that our friend took (she only took about 900 so I am sure there is one or two cute ones in there).  The dessert table also had my first attempt at Royal Icing!  I made these ladybug cookies and my mom and I spent hours elbow deep in red icing and had a great time making these little ladies come to life.

Her "Smash Cake" was an adorable ladybug cake that she LOVED!
She looks so serious, but I promise she was laughing and smiling the whole time.

For the favors I put together fun little boxes with a bug catching set, ladybug bubblegum, ladybug bubbles, a magnifying glass, a ladybug paddle ball and some fun candy.  The girls also got a ladybug hair clip that I made (just like the one Elise was wearing).  I didn't get a picture with everything together, but again I am hoping someone did.

We bought the live ladybugs to put in the garden for the kids to catch with their bug catching sets. They were all so precious and delicate with the bugs and made sure to give them lots of food and leaves. Something that made everyone laugh is one of my nephews (6 years old) decided that there was "Bug Food" for them....

If you look closely on the dessert table I had a jar labeled "Bug Food" that was actually Cheerios (Elise's favorite food) just in case she wanted a snack that wasn't all sugar... well she didn't eat a single piece, but the real ladybugs did.  Good job Brandon!

So in all, everything turned out great. We had a very special day with Elise and her family and friends. The weather cooperated and we had a fantastic First Birthday.

Sunday it rained all day and the backyard flooded. We lucked out!

The Party Snafu

Elise's birthday party is in only 5 days... as soon as I thought I had every detail set and every special touch that I was hoping for the forecast is announced- RAIN!  Damn!

Living in Southern California we don't get much rain.  In fact, you could probably plan an outdoor soiree 355 days out of the year and it would be marvelous.  So far it looks like I planned a great party on one of the few crummy days.  Go figure!  It was the same way for our beautiful outdoor garden wedding 3 years ago, I guess I should know better.

I am keeping the faith though.  I am pushing ahead and finishing up all of the last minute touches and I have a Plan A and a Plan B, both of which should produce a wonderful party.

We have serious ladybug fever in this house!  There are ladybugs EVERYWHERE!  Brian finally gave me a little grief and said that I may have gone overboard and wanted to know when I was planning on springing him the bad news that he will be dressed up as a ladybug.  Oh silly husband, I hadn't even thought of that! But.....it turns out that we will be having hundreds of extra guests, ALL dressed up as ladybugs!  That's right, we went to OSH this weekend to get a few things for the yard and saw that they have live ladybugs for your garden.  They keep them in a small plastic container in the fridge (so they sleep) and you take them home and at night you open the container at the base of your plants and flowers and leave it there.  When they wake up they cruise around the flowers and love life in your garden! How awesome is that!!!  The kids will love that there are tons of REAL ladybugs at the party!  (Disclaimer: They are alive, healthy and well taken care of.  They are actually good for your garden and thrive in this atmosphere!)

I guess it's back to praying that there is no rain because I'm not sure what ladybugs do in the rain.

Please. Please. Please!

Back to stalking the weather channel and hoping I don't have to squeeze 40 people in my living room!

Our Baby Girl Is Getting So Big

On March 26, 2010 our lives changed when we met Elise Katelynn, our beautiful daughter.

This last year has been such a blessing and a huge learning experience.  As cliche as is it, I really do learn something new everyday.  I remember the first few days at home with her and I thought "I've got this"... then as the months went by there were days where I thought "What in the world am I doing?"

But as much as I am learning, I cannot believe how much this little person has changed.  Everyday she is growing, learning and developing a new trait.

At eleven months old she already has several words in her vocabulary.

As a true girl, her favorite word (the one we hear at least 5,495 times a day) is shoes.  She can also say da-da, ma-ma (though not nearly as often as da-da), socks, this, side (for outside), tisses (kisses), bye, and I am sure there are more.

She has perfected the sign for "all done" and she signs it after every meal which steals my heart.

She is in love with dancing and will dance to any tune she hears and now has started singing along.  She sang for the first time when we went to church last week (after skipping several weeks which made us feel REALLY guilty).

She loves to clap and blow kisses and sing "Patty Cake"and a new trick that I LOVE is "Eskimo Kisses".  Nothing makes me happier than my little girl crawling into my lap, leaning in and giving me a soft Eskimo Kiss, followed by a real kiss  ::swoon::.

So...that's my little bragging session.  I love her and cannot wait to see what she learns today!

Here is Elise at a week old... so tiny and perfect!

What kind of Fun?

What kind of fun are we going to have?  Whatever we come up with!
My beautiful daughter will be turning one this month... ONE! I cannot believe it! With her being more and more active I want to spend more time coming up with creative things for us to do together, whether it is the whole family or just the two of us girls.

I have always been into "crafting" but I feel like I have more of a reason now... I'm sure you moms understand that.

So, this blog will help me keep track of my thoughts, plans and creations.  I would love to not only share my creations but also make sure I give credit to those who inspire me.

Here we go!
